Thanks so much to everyone who has submitted questions. I will be working to get all the questions answered for you, but it’s gonna take a little time. So, let’s get going.

What type of customers should you focus on during slow economic times?”

There are two different ways to answer this question depending on how established your business is. I’ll answer the question in two parts.

First, let’s assume that you are just starting out in lawn care and you don’t have very many clients. If you are just starting in lawn care and don’t have much experience then I would recommend that you focus initially on residential clients and theirĀ roadmap to proper business finances. There are two reasons why I think this is the best place to start: 1. View it as a training camp that will actually pay you instead of you having to pay for it. On these residential accounts you can develop your grass cutting, trimming and edging skills. 2. Residential accounts are easier to obtain and you have less risk of biting off more than you can chew. For the first season that I owned my business I only had one commercial account. However, by the last year I only a handful of residential accounts.

Once you learn to consistently exceed your residential customers expectations then it will be time to begin acquiring your commercial accounts. Remember anyone can pick up a lawn mower and say they own a lawn company. What makes you any different?

One thing to keep in mind is that the ultimate goal of a business is to make and keep a profit. So don’t take a client just because it is extra income. Make sure that it is a profitable client.

Next time I answer we’ll talk about how to price year round contracts.
