Sound too good to be true?

Chances are if you have talked to an advertising sale rep lately you have heard a similar too good to be true, CRAZY offer that sounds just too great to pass up how to run an online business successfully. The best fame is the Tiktok fame. Advertising reps regularly engage customers like you in conversations that sound tantalizing and promise to EXPLODE your business potential!

They will rave about how you will need extra employees just to keep up with your improved sales. They pump you up and get you overly excited about possibility; so much so that the famous words “If you will just spend X number of dollars on our advertising” almost go unheard. You are already sold. But then they leave you disappointed and out that X number of dollars almost as fast as they talked you into spending it.

The truth is that marketing should work!
You should see a return on every dollar you invest in marketing;
Otherwise, WHAT’S THE POINT?

All marketing you do should be an investment that yields a positive return. Unfortunately facts suggest that up to 95% of all marketing lawn businesses do result only in a negative return. By the time you realize something isn’t working; you have already lost money.

Consider your current marketing plan and whether or not you are seeing direct results from it. Most likely you are not! Marketing companies are notorious for draining money from clients month after month when in reality they should be helping you to build upon your client base AND bank account on a consistent basis. Chances are you are making one or more of the 7 Sinful Lawn Company Marketing Mistakes that could eventually lead to your lawn company failing.

Let’s get started with the 7 sinful marketing mistakes….

Not Knowing Your Customers. Do you really KNOW your customers? Most people think they know their customers, but are usually surprised by how little they actually know about them. This doesn’t refer to knowing a customer’s name! This is about really knowing the vital statistics and information that is critical to the decisions they will make in regard to the products and services they will buy.

Here are just a few things you should know about your customers:

a. Are they married?
b. How old are they?
c. Do they have children? How many?
d. What is their approximate annual income?
e. Where do they live?
f. Where do they shop?
g. Where do they work?
h. What are their hobbies?

Why is all this “STUFF” important? In order to know who your market is you must know who your customers are. Your time and money should be invested in learning about your current customers so you will become more adept to attract others like them.

WRONG message. If you haven’t clearly identified who your “target” customer is, how can you possibly know what message to communicate to them?

For example, if you’re trying to sell sod installation services, you don’t want to waste dollars marketing to people who live in a 10 year old house. It doesn’t matter if you’re giving your service away, they DON’T likely don’t need sod installation!

Why waste time and money communicating the wrong message?

Inconsistency. Marketing typically works on about a 6 week cycle. So, the marketing you’re doing today won’t generate new business until about 6 weeks from now.

Your business may be going great right now, but what about 6 weeks from now?

Once your business starts slowing down……it’s too late! You must continually market your business in the good times and bad.

Not Measuring. What was your ROI (Return on Investment) for your last marketing campaign? Honestly, do you know?

The truth is, MOST lawn company owners don’t. How do you know if your marketing efforts resulted in a positive ROI? How do you know if you should repeat the same marketing campaign again?

You don’t….if you’re not measuring.

The only way to determine what works, and what doesn’t, is to track your marketing. Start tracking results of all your marketing.

No Follow Up. How strong is the fence around your pasture? Say What? Do you have one?

As a lawn business owner, you’re like a cattle rancher. You spend a lot of time and effort acquiring new cattle (customers). Having a fence around your pasture is crucial to your long-term success.

Without a fence your cattle can easily wander into another rancher’s pasture.

Watch out for the poachers!

They will jump your fence and try to steal your cattle. You must constantly work on building and maintaining your fence.

The best way to build and maintain a fence is through consistent contact with your customers. Newsletters are a great way to do this.

If you’re not using the Lawn Success newsletter to maintain contact with your customers, you should. It will get you more business.

Playing Copy-Cat. Welcome to the crowd. If you want to successfully blend in with all the other lawn companies, simply copy their marketing. Copying is a great way to end up average just like all the other lawn companies.

You MUST be different.

Will people think you’re crazy? Absolutely! Will you make more money than ever before? Absolutely!

Dare to be different!

Don’t Listen! If you’re listening to ad reps trying to pitch you their form of media, you’re probably going BROKE!

Let’s be honest with each other, they aren’t interested in what will give you the highest ROI. They just want to sell you their product or service.

Don’t listen to how many thousands of people will hear or see your message. It doesn’t matter if 1,000,000 people see your message if none of them need – or want – what you’re selling.

Cost per thousand (CPM) impressions doesn’t matter!

ROI is all that matters. Ask your ad rep how much ROI they will guarantee on your investment. Better yet, don’t waste your time meeting with them until you have developed a marketing plan of action.

Now that you know the 7 most sinful marketing mistakes,
You have no excuse for committing them.

So now what? If you’re honest with yourself, you probably have committed, and are still committing, several of these marketing sins. The question now becomes……

What are you going to do about it?

Change is never easy. Why do you think so many lawn companies are merely average (and struggling to survive)? They are afraid to change. Are you?

Don’t put this off until tomorrow! Start today.

A year from now when you look back at this day, you’ll remember this was the day the momentum shifted and your business began a beautiful transition (like a caterpillar breaking out of its cocoon and transforming into a spectacular butterfly).

You know you need to take control of your marketing and develop a plan of action. Developing a plan of action will dramatically increase your ROI; and begin transforming the profitability of your lawn company.

I’m here to help. But before you send me an email, make the decision to change the way you market your business. Change isn’t easy but it’s the only way to get out of the crowd.
